Wow! Two posts in one day! Anyway, I just came across this article about a new study on low-carb diets. As much as the current nutritional establishment would like to disbelieve, it seems study after study is showing that a low-carb diet works and does not (at least in the short term) increase cholesterol levels.

I admit to doing the low-carb diet a few years ago, and though I wasn't on it for long, I did lose weight, and I certainly was not eating low-fat, though I did feel a little disgusted with some of my choices sometimes. The other odd thing I discovered was that my skin really improved while on the diet. Maybe it was coincidental but over the last few years my skin hasn't been so great. However, when I was on the diet, it really cleared up. I also didn't suffer from a lack of energy as I thought I would, and I was even training for a marathon at the time (which I never ran). Anyway, to read the article, click here.
Hum.... I guess it's been just about 3 months since I've posted. Pretty pathetic. Not coincidentally, however, I am three months pregnant (13 weeks to be exact) and am just starting to feel like a normal person again (at least for a couple of months until I start to look like I swallowed a watermelon). Not to mention, during the last three months, we also moved, and that took up a lot of my time with packing and unpacking (and trying to balance that with much needed afternoon naps). Anyway, we're happily settled in our new house life is somewhat normal these days.

Not sure if I will be able to begin posting on a regular basis again, but I did come across a couple of articles of note recently.

The first article focuses on a new program in New York City that is targeting pre-schoolers in the head start program in an effort to curb child obesity rates. According to the article, 20 percent of children are obese by the time they enter kindergarten. I don't know about you but I find that number staggering and depressing. It's great that the program is targeting such a high-risk group, since as it points out, many of these kids and their families do not have easy access to healthier choices. To read more, click here.

The other article I wanted to mention was about Jared, the "Subway Guy". You've probably seen the commercials about the guy who lost a ton of weight (245 lbs to be exact) eating nothing but Subway sandwiches (and some baked potato chips on the side). Though of course this is an extreme weight loss story, and of course a "fad" diet, the article can be somewhat inspiring, simply because he overcame the odds by not only losing the weight, but by keeping it off for more than four years. (Of course, he gets paid handsomly by Subway to keep the weight off.) Now he enjoys lots of food that most of us deprive ourselves in an effort to lose weight, but he has learned all about moderation after cutting back from 5,000 to 10,000 calories a day to less than 1500 during his Subway diet.
