I am sorry I haven't been keeping on top of my web log. As I mentioned before, I wasn't feeling well last week and more recently I have been preoccupied with looking at homes, which in the DC metropolitan area is a bit crazed.
TIP OF THE DAY
Be sure to warm up, and then stretch thoroughly before working out AND cool down and stretch thoroughly after working out.
I know you all probably know you are supposed to do this, but I can't emphasize enough how important it is. I think a lot of people who are short on time skip one or the other, or worse, both. But to avoid injury over the long run, you really need to maintain flexibility and the best way to do that is it stretch at the beginning and end of your workout. Why warm up first? Well, one trainer compared the process to pulling taffee. If you just take taffee while it is cooled off and try and stretch it, it breaks. But if you warm it up first, it stretches more easily. Compare that to your muscles. Ever notice that you are more flexible after your workout then before? That's why. And that's also when you should make the most of your flexibility.
QUOTE OF THE DAY
"The more I like me, the less I want to pretend to be other people." -- Jamie Lee Curtis, More magazine, September 2002
Knowing about my new project, my dad gave me an issue of More magazine with an article on Jamie Lee Curtis. I haven't read the article yet, but I am already inspired by what I see. On the first page of the article is a full-page picture of her in a sports bra and bike shorts. She has no make-up on, her "fatty little tummy" (her words, not mine) sticks out around the top of the shorts and her legs are less than perfect. But she still looks beautiful and the gist of the article is that despite what Hollywood makes us think, you CAN be beautiful even if you're not a size 2. I highly recommend you pick up a copy of the article, but don't worry if you can't. No doubt I will be posting lots of info/quotes from the article.
RECIPE OF THE DAY
Low-fat Seven Layer Mexican Dip
Ingredients
1 pint of fat-free sour cream
1 package of taco seasoning
1 can of jalapeno bean dip
2 c. shredded lettuce
2 c. reduced fat shredded cheddar cheese
1 diced tomato
1 finely chopped onion
1 small can black olives
1. Spread the bean dip evenly on the bottom of a flat platter or pie dish.
2. Mix the sour cream and taco seasoning thoroughly and then layer on top of the bean dip.
3. Add remaining ingredients in layers.
4. Chill and serve with tortilla chips or pita bread.
Note: A chunky salsa can be used in place of the tomato and onion.
This dip is always a big hit and it doesn't taste low-fat.
